Rise Up, My Love (206): The Power of the Sun

sunshine-and-green-leavesSong of Solomon 6:10 “Clear as the sun.” Finally, let’s consider one last— though perhaps most important—quality of the sun. The sun is life giving, in that God has given it to us to warm, enlighten, and make life and growth possible. The sun is a glowing globe of gasses 865,000 miles in diameter, 93,000,000 miles away from the earth, and about 18,000,000° F. at its burning core. At the top of our atmosphere, the earth receives an almost incomprehensible amount of energy, known as the “solar constant,” although we only intercept about 2.2 billionths of the sun’s power (Encyclopedia Americana, Vol. 26, 11-12). sun-on-laneVolumes could be written paralleling the sun to the power of God and his effect on man. The day will come when Christ will sit as judge and burn up the world with incredible heat (2 Peter 3:9-12), but until then, Christ reigns as savior and high priest, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). It is as if only 2.2 billionths of the Son’s power is exhibited on the earth today…not enough to destroy, but the perfect amount to provide life to all who will receive him! Even so, as believers, we should be like the sun (Son), not breathing fire to wither the sinners on earth, but shining brightly to provide light, warmth, and conditions conducive to the life and growth of the seeds (God’s Word) that God has told us to scatter around us. sun-between-buildings-in-chicagoTo have a countenance as clear as the sun is to truly reflect the Lord’s glory in such a way that it is too dazzling to bear. Have you ever watched a sunset or an eclipse? I remember once as a little girl going to school on a day when there was a famous eclipse of the sun taking place. We were allowed to observe the process of the eclipse, but not before we had been carefully warned by our teachers to never look directly at the sun or stare at it. I remember reading in the paper that one young girl stared at the sun for about seven minutes and became permanently blind. pelican-in-sunset-at-ponce-inlet-floridaThe sun is too strong for our eyes, and that exactly parallels the spiritual world. Our mortal eyes cannot behold our Lord in all his glory without being blinded. Nevertheless, we—as believers who behold the face of Jesus spiritually—will develop an inward radiance that can shine out from our lives “as clear as the sun” just as Moses did after he spent forty days and forty nights alone with God. Do you remember the account? After Moses came down from the top of Mount Sinai with the ten commandments, the children of Israel saw Moses’s face gleaming with such a radiance that it petrified them, and Moses had to cover his face with a veil when he spoke to them (Exodus 34:29-35). hot-air-balloon-in-sunTo have a face as clear as the sun would be to have a face something like Jesus’s when God allowed Peter, James, and John to see a little bit of his glory: “And [Jesus] was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light” (Matthew 17:2). Truly, the face of Jesus is even clearer than the sun, for it is indeed pure in God’s sight! When Saul met Jesus on the road to Damascus, he was blinded by the sight, and he only miraculously received his sight back three days later after he had believed (Acts 9:1-17). The glory of God is so much more powerful than the sun that it was commonly believed that no one could see the face of God and live (Judges 13:22). sunset-behind-monroe-street-bridge-in-spokane-wa“Clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners—” What is the effect of the sun? What does God command of this immense powerhouse of energy? “Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the day spring to know his place; That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?” (Job 38:12-13). The Lord ordains that his bride should be as clear as the sun in order to go forth like a mighty army against evil, to shake wickedness out of the earth like dust and sand are shaken out of a blanket. Oh, that we might so commune with and reflect the glory of Jesus that we will shine with faces that are transparent, pure, constant, brilliant, and life-giving: “clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners!”
