I Hope You’ll Be One of the Many to Read “One of the Few”

Jason B. Ladd“There are many ways to die. There’s only one way to really live.” Jason B. Ladd is one of the few who grew up as the son of a marine and became a marine. In fact, Jason is one of the few marines who not only became a fighter pilot but an instructor pilot for both the F/A-18 and F-16. Still, that’s not the most courageous thing he’s ever done. One of the Few One of the Few is a great read worth every minute you invest…not only in learning about how our military operates, but in pondering the core issues of life. It’s the fascinating, fast-paced autobiography of a young fighter pilot who recounts his life journey (so far) on both the physical and spiritual planes, including a look into the womb of darkness wherein a new spirit was conceived, dedicated, and brought to birth by God our Father. Jason writes with rare, self-aware transparency about the labyrinth of  experiences and research that brought him to the doorstep of faith. (As one small vignette among hundreds: “While standing on a glacier atop Mount Denali [McKinley], I thought of the many-paths-to-the-summit-of-a-mountain analogy spiritual pluralists use when preaching that ‘all paths lead to God.’ It wasn’t until later that I realized how quickly the analogy fails when you account for crevasses.”) His book is filled with facts and wisdom concerning most of the major religions. His bibliography includes over 100 entries from many of the world’s great leaders: military men, scientists, philosophers, and theologians. His style is easy but passionate, his tactical insights numerous (e.g. the OODA Loop [pg. 224]), and his quotable, common-sense remarks legion. (“While everyone has the right to believe in garbage, it won’t turn it into gold.”) Best of all, by the end of the book, you realize that none of us are excluded from the possibility of being “one of the few,” because life is not just about physical courage, it’s about spiritual courage as well!BaptismJesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.'” (John 3:3-7, ESV)

  1. I loved this, Kathy. I was so impressed with the way Jason was able to weave his experiences as a Marine into his story of becoming a Christian and growing in his faith. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks to Kathryn Armstrong for writing this book review of One of the Few: A Marine Fighter Pilot’s Reconnaissance of the Christian Worldview. I loved her review and wanted to share it with my readers. As I read the book myself, I was so impressed with the way Jason was able to weave his experiences as a Marine into his story of becoming a Christian and growing in his faith.

I hope you click over to Barnes & Noble (bn.com) or Amazon.com to get your own copy of the book. If you’re into audio, notice the offer to get the audio version free just by subscribing to Jason’s blog before December 31, 2015.
