“The Song of Solomon has universal appeal because the celestial strains of Christ’s overture resonate in the heart of every believer on earth and play out a melody of love that baffles angels and lifts our hearts to worship.” (—Kathryn W. Armstrong)
I began studying the Song of Solomon almost 20 years ago when my son Michael—who was then a teenager—asked me, “Mom, do you understand The Song of Solomon? What’s it all about?” And then, he proceeded to relate one dismal view he’d heard characterizing the book as an illicit love affair. I was shocked that the world could reduce even the most transcendent portions of Scripture into grist for the Hollywood grind, but it occurred to me that I wasn’t qualified to give an authoritative defense of my own foggy view of The Song of Solomon, which had developed over many years of reading this enigmatic love story without really meditating on it. Although my goal was simply to find out the truth about this stunning story and (if possible) keep my son from disillusionment, my project ended up as more than ten years of study and the thrill of a lifetime, because—without even realizing it—I had began a quest that would lead me to the heart of Christ. As Charles Spurgeon wrote in his book The Most Holy Place: “[The] Song of Solomon is the central Book of the Bible; it is the innermost shrine of divine revelation, the holy of holies of Scripture; and if you are living in communion with God, you will love that Book, you will catch its spirit, and you will be inclined to cry with the spouse, ‘Make haste, my beloved.’”
Although I read every book I could find that might illuminate The Song of Solomon, I discovered very quickly that this tiny poetic treasury has had extremely little commentary…throughout written history. Because of its erotic content, Jewish rabbis for centuries recommended that it not be read until a man was thirty! I also discovered that The Song of Solomon is the best kept secret in the Bible, and before long I found myself on a long, exciting spiritual journey, exploring obscure passages like a gold miner, stumbling over nuggets of truth and falling head over heels in love with the greater than Solomon who emerged from the pages…the One who satisfied my every longing as I learned to experience the truth of “I am my beloved’s, and his desire is toward me” (7:10).
If you are looking for happiness, meaning, and purpose, please take the time to meditate through The Song of Solomon with me, because I believe you’ll find what I found, and it will transform your life. Did you know that God is calling to you? He’s singing a more beautiful love song than any you’ve ever heard on earth. Listen to him singing… Rise Up, My Love.
“The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save,
he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love,
he will joy over thee with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17).
