Pictured Rocks and Other U.P. Beauty Secrets

Alan, Stephen, Joel and I spent last week on a marvelous tour of the Michigan’s gorgeous upper peninsula, visiting some of our favorite places and making sure that Stephen and Joel have lots of good memories of their “roots!” One of my favorite adventures was a boat tour of Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore. I stood breathless on the deck the whole time…filled my card with over 500 pictures. Definitely worth doing if you ever tour the U.P!

Our first night we hiked along the shore line of Union Bay Campground in the Porcupine Mountains. Perfect weather. Tranquil evening. The vast shores of Lake Superior are never crowded!

I suspect there are hundreds of waterfalls in the U.P. This one was taken on our hike along the Presque Isle River in the Porkies.

Here’s another beautiful water fall at Munising. Joel and Stephen took good care of their mom, making sure I didn’t slip at the wrong time.

Just about every night we were blessed with a spectacular sunset. This one was atop Brockway Mountain near the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula.

This waterfall was just at the bottom of the hill below our property when we lived in Marquette. The Dead River cascades in a labyrinth of falls for several miles before spilling into Lake Superior.Wetmore Landing, just north of Marquette, was a favorite hiking and picnicking spot for Alan and me on our “date nights” and our entire family on weekends.

Sugar Loaf Mt. is another great spot for watching the sunset in the Marquette area. If you’ve got the time and are a face book friend…I just downloaded about 150 of my favorite photos from the trip! If you’re ever planning a trip to the U.P. and want suggestions for where to go, what to do, or where to eat…I’d be more than happy to give you more ideas! Happy hunting!

  1. There are at least 198 waterfalls in the UP because I bought a book called 199 Waterfalls of Michigan and only one is in the Lower Peninsula. Bonnie and I have had two wonderful week-long tours of the UP and there are still many more places we want to visit. Thanks for the good photos.

  2. Sounds like you did everything that Will and I did on our honeymoon almost 20 years ago. Love the photos. I think you know Jamie is going to the U.P. for college? Mich. Tech. We plan to go visit him next weekend. Should be fun.
I never knew there were 198 waterfalls in the U.P. That’s pretty cool. It would be great to try and visit them all.

  3. I’m glad to know I was totally out to lunch to say “hundreds.” Guess I was also thinking of all the teeny, tiny waterfalls such as we had on our property (which we named “Barefoot Creek”). Brenda, have you and Tom been on a waterfall hunt? That would be fun! Jena, have fun visiting Jamie! We saw all sorts of kids gathering on the campus as we went by…talked to a couple who had just dropped off their son at Michigan Tech while we were at Jacob’s Falls. It’s SO beautiful up there!

  4. It is absolutely beautiful there. So glad you had a great time and you still have sons who can go with you. Good that you all got back safely.

  5. Maybe some day we should try for a family reunion up there or something! At church last Sunday, our pastor was teasing about the U.P. being the “end of the earth.” One of the men (who graduated from Houghton Tech) countered, “Oh, no! It’s paradise!”

  6. Hello,
My name is Kelly Smith and I am a freelance art director who works on tourism advertising for Cook County. I noticed your photograph of the three people walking standing on the shoreline at sunset and wondered if we could use your photograph in any upcoming ads for Cook County. I don’t have any concepts yet, but I’d like to get some images in the mean time.
    You do nice work.
You can reach me by phone at 763-535-3478 if you would like to discuss it further. Or you can email me at kelly@kreativesmith.com
    Thank you,
    Kelly Smith

  7. Kelly, I’ll email you! The picture was from Lake Superior, and I’m thinking Cook County is in Illinois. Am I wrong?
